Advisor to the US President discusses with the President of MINURSO the settlement of the desert file

Musaad Boulos, Advisor to the US President in charge of the Middle East and Africa, received Alexander Ivanko, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Mission in the Sahara (MINURSO), in a meeting that falls within the ongoing diplomatic movement on the future of the Sahara issue, coinciding with the approaching end of the current mandate of the UN Mission on October 31.

In an X-platform post, Paul said, The meeting was an occasion to discuss the “common desire to reach a successful and sustainable settlement of the issues related to the Sahara,” without providing additional details on the substance of the talks.

This meeting comes amid a US debate on reconsidering the nature of the UN mission and its future role, including putting forward ideas to reformulate its tasks and perhaps change its name, to align its presence with the new political track, at a time when the United States is intensifying its contacts with the parties and countries concerned to push for direct negotiations leading to a final political solution. Washington continues to push to make autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty a basis for negotiation.

The meeting also coincides with the recent briefings by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to the UN Security Council, and the Council's readiness to adopt a new resolution on the UN mandate. Within the framework of Paul's moves that intersect with de Mistura's path and the debate related to the future of the MINURSO mission.
